World Cup 2014 Group C qualifier

"It was vital today to get three points and we accomplished that."

Per Mertesacker 22', Mesut Özil 74' (pg), Thomas Müller 84'

In an unusual location and difficult conditions, Germany secure another three points to leave them one home win away from Brazil!

Germany beat Faroe Islands 3-0 - superior, not sensational
Germany closer to World Cup after Faroe win

"It was a mandatory requirement to pick up three points here and it was the sort of game we had expected," admitted Germany coach Joachim Löw. "They stood with 10 men in the penalty area, they are a team who know how to defend well.
"If there is anything to criticise, we have to work on our final touch.
"We didn't move as well after the break as we had in the first half and we have to improve our game in the final third of the pitch."
Germany and Löw build on confidence with one eye on Brazil
" But we also saw that the Faroes are capable of defending very well. It wasn't easy as a result. Especially when it came to the final pass, it's still something we need to improve. Overall we were a lot more stable defensively in these last two games. Now we can finalize qualification at home and that's always nice."

Ozil will soon settle at Arsenal - Löw

"Of course, I kept an eye on him a bit to see how he was feeling," Löw said of Ozil after the victory in Torshavn put Germany a win away from a 2014 World Cup place.
"He made a good impression and is looking forward to London. We'll have to see what the next weeks bring and how he fits in.
"Mesut is a player who can deal relatively quickly with another club and another coach, and he will join up with two players he knows very well and counts as friends. For this reason it won't be too difficult."
"We completed the job [winning tonight's match] we needed of getting three points," he said .
"The structure of our game on artificial turf was all right. The only thing missing was a second or third goal from the five, six, seven chances we had before halftime.
"Sometimes it was like handball. They had nine or 10 players standing in their own penalty area."
"We can make certain (of qualifying) in our last home game (against Ireland)," Löw said.
"A point will be enough in view of (superior) goal difference, so from this point of view we are well clear. With a win it's all done. That's our aim and it's nice for our fans." and said the situation in the group behind them was interesting.

Löw: "Manchmal war es wie beim Handball" - a post-match interview from Jogi talks about his thoughts on the match, the defensive situation, praising the defense, but saying the omitted Mats Hummels still has his trust ("he had a good tournament at Euro 2012 and can play at this level"), his reasons for not playing Mario Gomez in either game, and Sidney Sam.

Vertragsgespräche Mitte Oktober - a review of the inernational break weekend, Jogi says there will be no contract negotiations until qualification has been achieved, and speaks of a busy programme ahead of watching Bundesliga and Champions League games.

In the post-match interview with ZDF, he mentioned there would be friendly games against both Italy and England, should all teams in question qualify (Italy had secured their place that night.)

Press Conference, Torshavn, 9 September 2013

The Germany squad arrived in the Faroe Islands Monday lunchtime and then travelled the 50 km to their base with Jogi speaking at a press conference to give his initial impressions of the Islands. He described the nature, buildings and the abundance of colour and added "The Faroe Islands are exceptionally beautiful". from

Löw expects "difficult" Faroes clash

"We're taking the game very seriously," he said. "The Faroes make things difficult for the opposition when they play at home - they've impressed me! The most important thing is to accept the conditions and take maximum points from the game."
The Torsvollur stadium in Torshavn holds just over 6,000 fans and only had floodlights installed in August 2011. "We've looked at the state of the pitch and spoken to Horst Hubresch, who was here recently with the Under-21s," said Löw. "Of course the atmosphere will be different. There's glass behind one goal and a concrete wall behind the other. It'll be strange to play without any fans behind the goals, but I hope we'll still manage to score!"
German coach Joachim Löw ready for rough and ready tie with Faroe Islands
"My first impression is that there is a lot of nature here. The island seems like a rough place and I think we are going to have to deal with rough and tough players.
"For such a small country they can defend really well, and are well organised. We expect this to be a completely serious game.
"The Faroe Islands have made life difficult for a lot of teams at home and it's important that we understand what the conditions are like here.
"But the only thing that really interests me is that we take the three points."
Löw: "Möchte keinen Spieler hören, der jammert"
"I do not want to hear any players moaning" he said, on the conditions the players will face.

Main Team news:
- Miroslav Klose will definitely start
- two/three places still to fill. Julian Draxler/Andre Schurrle considered to replace Reus, also possibly Sidney Sam.

Joachim Löw: "Walfleisch würde ich nicht essen" - questions and answers with Jogi on arrival. He talks of the hotel menu, the salmon being truly outstanding, but personally cannot be tempted by the whalemeat!
