Jürgen Klinsmann and Joachim Löw, 2004-2006
|Klinsmann delight at Löw arrival - 30 July 2004|
Joachim Löw has been named assistant to Germany's new national team coach Jürgen Klinsmann.
Löw is the latest addition to Germany's backroom staff, following Klinsmann's arrival and the appointment of Oliver Bierhoff as team manager. Löw's contract will commence on 1 August and run until after the FIFA World Cup finals on 30 July 2006. The 44-year-old led VfB Stuttgart from 1996-98. His most recent job was as coach of FK Austria Wien, a post from which he was sacked in March.
Klinsmann, 40 today, said he was pleased to have secured Löw's services, particularly after Holger Osieck turned down a similar coaching position earlier this week. "I have found a competent coach in Joachim Löw, who was my favourite and who fits the job profile," he said. "I have known him for many years and I have great respect for him. He will have lots of responsibility and I am sure it is in good hands."
Löw himself added: "It is an honour to take up such a responsible position with the national team." As hosts, Germany qualify automatically for the World Cup finals.
